I provide a bespoke consultancy service to guide and assist prospective art buyers, particularly in the specialised world of contemporary stone sculpture. I also consult on other visual art forms, including wood sculpture, ceramics, photographic works, and other fine art. I understand that finding, choosing and positioning a work of art can be a surprisingly difficult and often time-consuming project.
Given the bewildering amount of choice available – of artists, styles, materials and prices – it can take a certain type of courage and perhaps even a leap of faith to make the decision to buy and then to feel confident about that decision. Indeed many prospective purchasers find it easier to choose a new car or buy a new house than decide on a work of art, even though the car and house will almost certainly cost significantly more. Which is where my personal guidance and expertise comes in.
I have over 30 years experience in the art market. During this time I have visited studios all over the UK, forging close relationships with many artists, and nurturing and championing outstanding talent. I have developed an eye for finding the right art, and negotiating the right price, for a wide variety of private and corporate clients. I’m also adept at identifying the best locations to display the work, whether inside or outdoors.
May 2019 saw the opening of Art Unbound, my curated exhibition of contemporary sculpture at the magical Painswick Rococo Garden in Gloucestershire. This is a new partnership with the Rococo Garden Trust showing 18 fantastic sculptors working in a variety of media including bronze, ceramic, glass, copper, stone, wood, wire and found objects. Meanwhile, over the last fifteen years I have co-curated the UK’s most prestigious contemporary stone sculpture exhibition,
on form in Oxfordshire. In 2013, I took on form to London for the first time and, as with Asthall Manor, the London exhibition was acclaimed both for the quality and range of its art and for the imagination and flair of the show’s curation.
Prior to on form I had almost ten years’ experience as an art consultant and exhibition organiser for the Berkeley Square Gallery in London’s West End (now Osborne Samuel Gallery) guiding private and corporate buyers through the art jungle.
Before that, my formative years were spent scouring the art college degree shows for artistic excellence and running Affordable Art, a business I co-founded in order to match impoverished but up-and-coming young artists with impecunious but up-and-coming young art lovers.
First, I get to know my client’s taste and requirements and develop a feel for them and their location. Depending on the client’s budget, this may involve a pre-purchase visit.
I then draw on my extensive knowledge of the market and my familiarity with exceptional contemporary artists to find and filter a huge array of potential choices into a manageable selection from which to choose. This might include ideas for a new commission rather than an existing work.
Now that the hard task of filtering is complete, the client can focus on making a final decision. That job should be made easier by having my experience and objectivity to draw on.
These same qualities are also invaluable in negotiating a fair price from the artist and in identifying the best site for a new work once a purchase is made.
In addition to helping numerous private clients with their choice of art works, over the years I have helped a wide range of corporate buyers including:
Private clients include purchasers from the UK, Europe and North America
